Schaefferstown’s Cherry Fair, a celebration with roots hundreds of years old, is almost here again.
The Traditional Cherry Fair & Early American Craft Show will take place from 10:00am to 5:00pm on this Saturday, June 22, at the Alexander Schaeffer Farm (213 South Carpenter Street). General admission is $5.00 but children 12 and under will be admitted for free. Plenty of parking will be available, but pets are not permitted.
Historic Schaefferstown Incorporated (HSI) will host the rain-or-shine event, which stems from area traditions dating back to the 1700’s. Craftspeople will be there to show off and demonstrate traditional American crafts, farming methods, sawmills, and blacksmith work. Wagon rides, activities, and a tour of the historic Schaeffer farmhouse and Heirloom Garden will be included.

Of course, there will be cherry treats and ice cream to sweeten the day. A raffle will also be held. The raffle includes five items that have already been picked: a shawl made from the sheep to shawl at the 2018 Cherry Fair, a sgraffito redware plate, a PA Cherry wood spatula, a handmade leather bag, and a redwood turned segmented multi use cup. Cost for tickets are 1 for $2, 3 for $5, and 7 for $10, and winners do not need to be there at the time of the drawing.
The musical stylings of the Holt Twins & Charmaine will be heard at the event, along with the Keystone Band of Rehrersburg. The bands will be playing in the afternoon.
If you can’t make it to the fair, consider one of HSI’s other programs coming up later in the summer. These include a treat of Afternoon Garden Tea on the Farm on July 14 (which includes a tour of the house and Heirloom Garden), World War II Weekend on July 27-28 (in recognition of the 75th Anniversary of the Normandy Invasion), and a popular Young Villagers Colonial Workshop held from July 15-18 for students entering 4th through 7th grade (be sure to register ahead of time by calling 717-866-5242).
Later on in 2019, be sure not to miss the Fall Harvest Fair on September 14-15 and Christkindlmarkt on December 14. More information to come on these events as they approach.
