On Friday, July 10, Gretna Theatre will present a showing of Broadway’s live performance of “42nd Street” on Soldiers Field.
42nd Street was filmed live at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, located in London’s West End. Set in the year 1933, a young actress decides to chase her lifelong dream of becoming the lead in a Broadway show. Songs such as, “42nd Street,” “We’re In the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off To Buffalo” and “I Only Have Eyes For You” are featured in the musical.
All who attend the drive-in will be able to park starting at 8:00 p.m. and the film will begin at dusk. The cost is $25 per vehicle and all tickets must be purchased beforehand at gretnatheatre.org/the-season.
To get to Soldiers Field from Route 117, turn onto Timber Road at the Mount Gretna Pizza Shop. All vehicles will be parked at Timber Road and Valley Road.
The film will be shown on an enormous screen and attendees will be able to tune their FM radio to hear the audio during the film.
“The pandemic has restricted us from gathering in the Playhouse to enjoy Broadway productions live, but we’re not going anywhere,” said Brian Kurtas, Gretna Theatre’s Executive Producer, in a press release. “We are still committed to adapting to provide quality theatrical entertainment to Central Pennsylvania.”
In order to follow health and safety guidelines and protocols, everyone must stay at their vehicles, while being parked at a distance. A South Londonderry Township officer will be in attendance. There will be no motorcycles, scooters, and bikes allowed.
Concessions, including choices of small snacks and beverages, will be for sale. All concession sales will be delivered to the intended vehicles and will involve no contact.
Porch & Pantry Restaurant has sticky buns available to pre-order for $3 each. They will be made on the day of the film showing. Mount Gretna Pizzeria is also offering slices of cheese pizza to pre-order for $2 each. The pizza will be made on the day of the film showing. All pre-orders will be delivered to the attendee’s vehicle when arriving. To pre-order, visit gretnatheatre.org/drive-in.
The event will be moved to a later date in the case of severe weather. The makeup date will be on the following evening or the week after. The change in date will be sent via email to all vehicle registrations. There will be no restrooms available for use to comply with the Pennsylvania Chautauqua.
