Don’t miss your opportunity to see the habitat of the rare regal fritillary butterfly at Fort Indiantown Gap.

Each year, Fort Indiantown Gap provides access to the habitat of this rare butterfly, located on the grounds of the nationโ€™s largest National Guard training facility by number of mandays trained.

Advance registration is required for these tours, which will be held at 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and noon on July 1, 2, 8, and 9.

โ€œThese tours allow the public to see this rare butterfly and its associated grassland habitat on military training ranges, as well as the many other natural wonders on the 17,000-acre military installation,โ€ said John Fronko, director DMVA Bureau of Environmental Management, in a press release.

โ€œStaff will also highlight a variety of animals and plants found at Fort Indiantown Gap and how the military presence on the installation is vital to the persistence of these species and their ecosystems.โ€

During the tour, attendees will participate in a caravan from the meeting location to the tour location using their personal vehicles. Meeting location and parking information will be provided to those who register. Total tour time is approximately one hour, not including driving time to and from the tour site.

Organizers say that the tour is open to visitors of all ages and abilities. Tours will be on foot along gravel roads and mowed paths. Attendees are also recommended to bring along drinking water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear as there is little to no shade on the tour route. Tours will be conducted rain or shine.
