Editor’s Note: Last year, Michael and Nicole Borrell began reviewing Lebanon Valley’s restaurants and eating attractions as the Lebanon Valley Food Critics. Since then, the couple has aimed to offer unbiased reviews of the eating and drinking establishments the Lebanon Valley has to offer. LebTown is pleased to be partnering with LVFC to share these reviews with our readers. Bon appétit!
‘Tis the season for busy days and fun shopping trips. After the little critic had a visit with Santa in Annville, momma and gigi critics went off for a mid-day shopping trip to get gifts for our friends and family. But first we stopped at Funck’s Restaurant in Palmyra, a stop on our “Soup Stroll.”
We walked into the restaurant, and I was amazed at the transformation from the last time we were there (before we became food critics). The dining area has been renovated and updated. The menu has also changed slightly from the last time we visited, though the Funck’s classic signature dishes are still listed.

We researched to make sure this was really where we wanted to stop for lunch today. The specials menu featured a tortellini soup that piqued our interest, along with a classic French onion soup. The tortellini soup ($6.50 cup) was a creamy soup with veggies, sausage, and tortellini. It was rich and filling, so good that Gigi critic ordered a cup to go for the grandfather critic. The French onion soup ($8) was a standard version of the classic, topped with some onion straws that had a nice crunch on top. The only thing I would have changed would have been toasting the cheese on-top a bit more.
We also ordered a turkey cranberry wrap ($15), which had a generous amount of turkey, Swiss cheese, baby spinach, dried cranberries, and a cranberry mayo. It was plenty to eat after the soup, so half was taken home to enjoy later. I got a brisket melt ($18) which had tender flavorful brisket, bacon, cheddar cheese, caramelized onion, and a creole ranch on grilled sourdough. I only ate half as well since the crock of soup was so filling. I put it in the oven to warm up later and it made for a nice crispy lunch. I would have liked a little more mayo on it, as it seemed to lack that flavor in spots throughout the sandwich.
Our take: Funck’s offers a great option for a nice lunch with family. The staff was friendly and since we were busy chatting about our shopping plans, our waitress was patient with us when we hadn’t quite decided on what we wanted. The interior changes to the dining area make for a cozy feel and the menu is unique.

Be on the lookout as we continue to make our way around the Valley and we gear up for our newest “Wars” series.
