Editor’s Note: Last year, Michael and Nicole Borrell began reviewing Lebanon Valley’s restaurants and eating attractions as the Lebanon Valley Food Critics. Since then, the couple has aimed to offer unbiased reviews of the eating and drinking establishments the Lebanon Valley has to offer. LebTown is pleased to be partnering with LVFC to share these reviews with our readers. Bon appétit!

Welcome to the first season of our highly anticipated Lebanon Valley Steak Wars. Three entrants from the Valley will compete to be declared the winner of Best Steak in The Valley.

Our judgement will be based upon several factors including cooking/preparation of the steak, seasoning, quality, and overall critic impression.

We continue out to the north end of the Valley with a stop in the tavern house at Rt. 934 and Jonestown Road. Harper’s Tavern is a standalone restaurant with an interior bar room, several dining rooms and plenty of parking around the backside.

Our selection for judgement this evening was a medium Delmonico cut with sautéed onions ($34 + $1.50 for sautéed onions). We also got two sides: salad and wild rice.

The Delmonico cut came out with noticeable grill marks, however, was lacking the char from the sear that should go with it. Each bite was flavorful, which it’s known for, as well the melt-in-your-mouth aspect. The combination of minimal seasoning, precise cooking, and the steak’s inherent marbling results in a flavor profile that’s indulgent. As any steak enthusiast would say, its hard to not have a great steak from this cut.

How will this steak stack up against the others? We shall see!

Next up we will travel to our final entrant: Tony’s Mining Company. After which, we will announce our winner.
