WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital has received national recognition for its care of heart attacks and heart failures.

The hospital is one of six WellSpan hospitals that has been named “high performing” for its procedures and conditions in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-2025 Best Hospitals: Procedures & Conditions ratings.

Fewer than half of the country’s hospitals received any high performing rating in the 35th annual report, with the six WellSpan hospitals receiving 16 in total and WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital itself receiving two.

“We are incredibly proud of our team’s relentless pursuit of excellence and their commitment to caring for our community,” said Dr. Mike Seim, senior vice president and chief quality officer at WellSpan Health. “Together, we are making a difference in the lives of the communities we serve through high-quality care and improved patient outcomes.”

The U.S. News & World Report’s health researchers evaluated more than 4,300 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions.

These health researchers designed and continue to update methodologies for evaluating the hospitals’ specialties as well as procedures and conditions, especially after criticism about the methodologies rose in late 2022.

Eligible hospitals were categorized into three groups: high performing, average, and below average. The high performing ratings empower patients with the knowledge to seek treatment at hospitals best suited to their needs.

This year, health researchers used unprecedented amounts of data from Medicare through its administrative claims and its Care Compare program, to assess hospitals for 11 specialties, as well as outcomes from outpatient care. Starting next year, data from Medicare will also be used in the methodology used to assess procedures and conditions.

Also used in this year’s methodology was the American Hospital Association’s annual survey, feedback from board-certified physicians for most specialties, and data from other sources such as clinical registries.
