The Annville Free Library is searching for a new library director after Dylan Fye’s resignation from the position, with his last day set for Tuesday, Nov. 26.

In an email to LebTown, Fye stated he is only leaving the Annville Free Library “because another opportunity came knocking to serve our library system in a different capacity!”

Marty Brandt, president of the Annville Free Library, followed up with LebTown via email, stating: “Dylan resigned to take a different job, and we accepted his resignation with regrets. He is leaving on good terms and has offered to help train our next library director.”

The library director is responsible for managing the library and its operations; recruiting, training, and managing six library staff members; leading efforts to develop programming, community outreach, and fundraising campaigns; presenting monthly and annual reports to the board of directors and the Office of Commonwealth Libraries; collaborating with the board; and other tasks.

The library is accepting applications for the full-time position โ€” which has a starting salary of $42,000 to $47,000 depending on experience โ€” until the position is filled.

Starting 30 days after their start date, the library director will receive a reimbursable monthly payment of $416.66 that can be used for health insurance or a retirement plan.

The library might consider reimbursing the library director for library sciences master’s degree credits as well.

Prior to his resignation as library director of the Annville Free Library, LebTown spoke with the Lewistown native about what inspired him to become a librarian and what led him to Annville Township.

Fye majored in history and minored in geography at Lock Haven University. It was during the undergraduate program that he started to work in a library environment as an intern in the university’s archive.

He graduated at around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. A little while later, he started his career at the Mifflin County Library, where he worked full-time as a clerk, then a cataloger, then “the kind of technology guy,” he said.

During his time as a Mifflin County Library staff member, Fye’s once-children’s librarian then-library director Susan Miriello served as his supervisor.

“[Susan] was a great mentor to me, especially because she pushed me to go get my master’s degree,” said Fye, who recently earned his master’s degree in library and information science from Penn West Clarion.

“And she knew that I was looking ahead toward my career. So, she really did mentor me on what it means to be a library director and the kind of responsibilities that you have. So, I owe a lot to her.”

Miriello was the one who sent Fye the job listing for the Annville job this summer. What most attracted him to the library was its expansion project and the community support behind it.

“When I first was researching this library, I found the building expansion website that they had created and seeing the support that the community gave to the library, not just the board of directors or the staff but the volunteer work that was done and the volunteer donations that were made is unprecedented for a community of this size,” Fye said.

After Fye was hired as the new Annville Free Library director in early July, Dee Neff, former Annville Free Library director who was retiring after more than 35 years of working in libraries, helped him become acquainted with the community surrounding the library and the responsibilities that come along with the position.

Others who helped make it a smooth transition were Brandt and Rachel Van Orden, library treasurer, as well as library staff members.

As for his personal favorite responsibilities as Annville Free Library director, Fye said, “I love the chances I get to talk to patrons because I don’t often have the chance to do that, and that’s what I used to enjoy the most when I worked at the circulation desk.”

LebTown observed this firsthand as Fye eagerly introduced himself to two community members immediately after having his picture snapped.

Fye was introduced as the new Annville Free Library director at the North Annville Township supervisors meeting in October, not long before he turned in his resignation to accept the other position.
