Officer Moser trained and certified as Drug Recognition Expert – The Pennsylvania Drug Recognition Expert program recently recognized eight law enforcement officers from across the commonwealth, including Officer Christopher Moser from South Lebanon Township, who recently completed extensive training and are now nationally certified Drug Recognition Experts. With this graduating class, Pennsylvania now has approximately 280 certified DREs — including two in Lebanon County.

The Drug Evaluation and Classification Program was established to train police officers around the country in identifying and enforcing instances of impaired driving caused by controlled substances. The rigorous Drug Recognition Expert training course consists of successfully completing a three-part program prior to being certified. The first two phases include a two-day introductory course, followed by 56 hours of instruction and a final exam. In the third phase, participants conduct week-long, real-world evaluations on the streets of Philadelphia. DREs are utilized by law enforcement when a driver appears to be impaired, and police have ruled out alcohol as the cause or sole cause of impairment.

A DRE’s training is approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). As an IACP-certified Drug Recognition Expert, Moser is trained to use a 12-step drug influence evaluation to successfully enforce these cases and remove impaired drivers from our area roadways. The program strengthens the state’s efforts to prevent drugged driving on local roadways. The police department congratulates Officer Moser for the work put into completing this training and appreciates the efforts in making our roads safer.
