Thank you, South Londonderry Township residents, for entrusting me with another term as Supervisor.
It’s time to turn from campaigning to continuing to govern. However, I have some observations from the polls to share. I love working the polls because I get to meet so many of our residents! I’m not only at the polls for my elections but every election and it’s always worthwhile.
A young medical student came in with a mail-in ballot so she could vote in person. When I greeted her I introduced myself and mentioned I was a supervisor running for re-election. She went in but then came back out and said she realized she had an opportunity to ask me as a candidate some questions. We had a conversation where I think we both learned something. I don’t know if she voted for me but I do know I was glad she hadn’t mailed her ballot because we had the chance to have a conversation.
A woman who said “I could never vote for you” because of my party came out and said my daughter reminded me of what you did for my grandchild while you were on school board and I voted for you. I thanked her, as a school board member I would have never known her grandchild’s predicament had I not met the family at the polls.
Lastly, there was a person with a F— Trump button. I had encountered him in the primary and when he find out my party he proceeded to slander me. My simple response was “you don’t know me” and I got the double bird. When he left the polls I thanked him for voting. When he came in this time he didn’t yell at me so I’ll count that as progress. I again thanked him for voting.
I also learned about Team Vienna. I have no connection to the organization other than meeting Vienna’s mom at the polls but if you want to learn something new today check out the link.
All of this is part of the American experience. As more people use mail-in ballots it is my opinion that we lose something. Something that I feel we have to try to recreate in other ways. Maybe a coffee with a supervisor, I don’t know, but as an elected official I think it’s worthwhile trying to figure out how to have those in person moments outside of a structured meeting.
Thank you again and I look forward to serving the residents of South Londonderry Township for another term. We have a great community because of all of you!
Sincerely,
Bill Bova
South Londonderry Township Supervisor
