While attending York College of PA, I was not too far away from Baltimore, Maryland. While it’s not known as a foodie town, they do have some regional specialties, one being pit beef. It was something I’ve had a lot during my college years.
Pit beef is thinly sliced after being cooked over an open pit and quickly charred to maintain its rare/medium rare temperature.
Recently we saw a new stand opened in the Farmer’s Market that was serving, you guessed it, pit beef. Could I turn down reliving some of my college days? Of course not. So, I made my way down and visited The Henry P. Robeson House’s stand and thought I’d give it a try.

Available at their stand, which is just inside the 9th St. side of the building, is pit beef, smoked pulled ham, and smoked ribs, as well as sides and a couple of soups.

In my college years, the order would be medium rare, piled high on a Kaiser roll with lots of horseradish, and I mean lots.
Unfortunately, I am unable to handle horseradish like my younger self could. Which is why I opted to have it open faced ($15) with my two sides being mac & cheese and buttered corn.
The pit beef has a good char and is simply seasoned. Being open faced, it could have used some more gravy. You get a heaping pile of beef, and the texture is that unique pit beef signature quality. Next time, I will suffer the consequences and get it with their homemade horseradish just like old times.

Our take: This Berks County restaurant brings some of its signature menu offerings to the Lebanon Valley. Quality pit beef is not something you find in this area often. This pit beef ia good quality. You get a healthy portion of it too. We have no doubt the other meats here are just as good.
