High school students in the 102nd Legislative District are invited to participate in a newly created student essay contest commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
A component of the America250 celebrations includes a ceremonial session of the state House of Representatives on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Congress Hall in Philadelphia according to a press release from state Rep. Russ Diamond (R-102nd). Each House district will select a student to represent the community and take part in the “historic statewide initiative, … which aims to highlight the legislative branch’s role and encourage youth participation in government,” the release explained.
“This anniversary offers a valuable moment for students to consider our nation’s founding ideals and how they continue to shape our lives today,” Diamond said in the release. “I encourage students to take part, share their viewpoints, and engage in this meaningful civic opportunity.”
Rising high school juniors or seniors who reside in the 102nd District are eligible to enter by submitting an essay about the country’s founding principles, the release said. The deadline for applications is June 1.
Educators and school administrators are encouraged to share the contest with eligible students and support their participation.

Municipalities in the 102nd District include Annville, Bethel, East Hanover, Heidelberg, Jackson, Millcreek, North Annville, North Londonderry, Swatara and Union townships, and Cleona, Jonestown, Myerstown, Palmyra and Richland boroughs.
Jamie Miller, office manager for state Rep. John Schlegel (R-101st), told LebTown that Schlegel will “be working with our local school districts in choosing a student to attend the ceremonial session in Philly.”
