A local chapter of an international preservation organization is helping restore a piece of Lebanon County history.
The Questers Lodwarrick #344 Chapter on May 14 presented a $1,000 check from the Pennsylvania State Questers to the Hebron Moravian Cemetery committee for the refurbishment of the cemetery’s iron gates at the Walnut Street main entrance. The grant follows a previous $1,000 contribution from the local chapter, which was required as part of the state grant application process.
Founded in 1748, Hebron Moravian Cemetery is one of Lebanon’s oldest burial grounds and reflects the traditions of the Moravian faith, including a “choir system” that categorized graves based on age, gender, and marital status. The site is the final resting place of notable figures including war veterans.
The cemetery received a historic designation from Pennsylvania in October, a recognition that serves as a precursor to potential national designation. The gate restoration project is the latest effort to preserve the site for future generations.
Questers is an international nonprofit organization headquartered in Philadelphia dedicated to preserving history through education, restoration, and research, with a focus on antiques, historic sites, and landmarks. Across Pennsylvania, local chapters support preservation and restoration projects by applying for grants or raising funds to protect historic landmarks in their communities.
Members of the Lodwarrick #344 Chapter and cemetery committee members were on hand for the check presentation, including Sharon Workman-Smith, Jessica Creter, Deb Kramer, Jill Hench, Pam Wentling, Joanne Durbin and Richard Durbin of the Questers, along with committee members Susan Dieffenbach, John Klahr, and Michael Brauner.
