The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation invites Lebanon County residents to review and comment on plans to replace an aging bridge that carries Gravel Hill Road over an unnamed tributary to Swatara Creek.
The project would replace the existing structure — a 16-foot, single-span corrugated steel pipe arch bridge built in 1967 — with a precast concrete box culvert. The current bridge has a curb-to-curb width of about 24 feet and carries an average of 3,263 vehicles per day.
Along with the new culvert, the work includes widening and paving the roadway approaches, guide rail improvements, new pavement markings and drainage improvements. Overhead utilities at the site may need to be de-energized or relocated.
The bridge will be closed during construction. An 11.7-mile detour will route traffic along Gravel Hill Road, U.S. Route 22 (William Penn Highway), Route 743 (Laudermilch Road), Route 2014 (North Lingle Road/Gravel Road) and Route 4008 (Ridge Road).
The project remains in design. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2028 and last about seven months.
Plans, including bridge designs and an interactive comment form, are available online from June 29 through July 29. PennDOT said the display is intended to introduce the project and gather public questions, comments, and concerns.
