The Mount Gretna International Film Festival, aka Mt.GIFF, will present a special weekend of animation programming on Aug. 14-16 featuring acclaimed filmmakers Joanna Priestley, Paul Harrod, and Lynn Tomlinson.
“Since Mt.GIFF has expanded its featured genres to include, for the first time, animation, they made the right choice in inviting three of this country’s most illustrious animation artists,” veteran film festival director and Mt.GIFF artistic consultant Richard Herskowitz said in a release. “They will not only be screening and talking about their award-winning films but also meeting with the festival’s other guest filmmakers to share their experiences in the animation field.”
Following an evening reception on Friday, Aug. 14, filmmakers, donors, and Mt.GIFF volunteers are invited to a special guest artist presentation by Priestley, often called the “Queen of Independent Animation,” and Harrod, award-winning art director and production designer for “Isle of Dogs,” “Wendell & Wild,” and Apple TV+’s “Shape Island.”
Harrod will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the design and production process for major stop-motion projects, sharing rare images and footage while discussing collaboration with directors, concept development, and managing model and puppet teams. Priestley will showcase her handmade animation techniques and discuss “Big Green,” her feature-in-progress celebrating plants and flowers. Her presentation will include animated botanical illustrations, stunning plant photography, insights into using AI-generated imagery, and the challenges of creating an independent animated feature, the release said.
That Saturday evening, following the festival film blocks, Priestley and Tomlinson will screen their award-winning films and participate in a public talkback, offering audiences an opportunity to engage directly with two innovative voices in contemporary animation.
Then, on Sunday morning, filmmakers, film students, and industry professionals are invited to attend a special breakfast conversation with Priestley, Tomlinson, and Harrod, moderated by Herskowitz. The discussion will explore career pathways, creative challenges, and practical advice for emerging filmmakers.
