The City of Lebanon will crack open a piece of history Monday when it unveils the contents of a time capsule buried in 1976 by the city’s Bicentennial Committee.
The opening is set for 6 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Lebanon City Hall, 735 Cumberland St. The capsule was buried at the Liberty Pole in Coleman Memorial Park during Lebanon Week on June 9, 1976, as part of the nation’s 200th birthday celebration. It was unearthed Wednesday, July 1, in a semiquincentennial ceremony.

The last surviving member of the city’s Bicentennial Committee will join Mayor Sherry Capello for the event. Shane Keenan, an archivist from the Lebanon County Historical Society, will be on hand to consult on the capsule’s contents, which will be on display for viewing only.
A plaque at the burial site notes the capsule was interred as “a lasting reminder to our future generations of our dedication to the principles of the Constitution.”
The city plans to bury a new time capsule at 9:30 a.m. July 28 at the Liberty Pole in Coleman Memorial Park. The new capsule will contain the original 1976 items along with additions from the 250th Committee, Visit Lebanon Valley, and the city. It is set to be unearthed in 2076 for America’s 300th anniversary.
