For almost 140 years, the U.S. government, through the Library of Congress, has honored the field of poetry in terms of its power and presence in our communities by choosing a Poet Laureate (first referred to as Consultant in Poetry) to represent this particular art in our culture. But who were the people they chose as a representation of that very same power and presence, and what did they themselves create?
In these investigations, we’ll take a deep dive into the actual poetry of four pivotal Consultants in Poetry and Poet Laureates in an attempt to discover why their particular art was chosen as a Bellweather for poetry in this country, and how they may have made indelible contributions to the lives of readers and writers across the American landscape.

The sixth annual James Biever Memorial Run will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Lebanon Expo Center, featuring a scenic course along the beautiful Lebanon Valley Rail Trail. The event offers a 10K, 5K, and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk, welcoming runners and walkers of all ages and abilities.
Hosted by the James Biever Police-Community Alliance, proceeds support local law enforcement through scholarships for students pursuing criminal justice careers, training for officers, equipment purchases, and programs that strengthen police-community relationships. Conversation Café: ‘Common Ground’ at Hall of Philosophy

We revisit, by request, last year’s showing of “Common Ground,” which highlights regenerative farming. Now, view the documentary through the lens of knowing that Pennsylvania is accelerating regenerative farming as a participating partner with a new USDA-backed $700 million pilot program, focusing on enhancing soil health. This, coupled with investments by America’s food industry, illustrated by McDonald’s USA’s late 2025 $200 million seven-year initiative into the Grassland Resilience and Conservation Initiative in partnership with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, is a trend that we should work to understand. Investments are designed to enhance biodiversity, conserve water, improve soil health, and boost economic returns for farmers and ranchers while working toward sustainability goals that should bring us toward net-zero by 2050. Come and prepare yourself to take part in broader community dialogues on the subject while enjoying this initial local opportunity to ‘expresso’ yourself and/or share some personali-tea!

She is a lapsed Master Gardner (Texas) and spent a year as an intern at Home Sweet Farm, a sustainable CSA farm in central Texas. Tom Maiello is the convener of a number of discussion groups, most recently Great Discussions Myerstown, which meets monthly at the Myerstown Community Library under the tagline, “Imagine Talking as a Way of Peace.” Together, they invite thoughtful dialogue and welcome your insights!

Hope for Hurting Parents at North Cornwall Commons

Hope for Hurting Parents was started by Tom and Dena Yohe in 2011, based on their own 10-year journey with their daughter, Renee, who struggled with mental health issues, addiction, and self-injury. They continue to lead free Zoom meetings monthly and send out inspirational emails weekly. They encourage people to start small in-person groups in their own community, which Joe Duke did three years ago.
People seem to find comfort and strength in meeting with others who have gone through similar situations. At support group meetings, we discuss one of 22 topics as outlined in Yohe’s workbook, such as self-care, enabling, worry, anxiety, hope, and guarding your family. The workbook also includes prayers, exercises, websites, and other resources.
Support group sessions are free and open to anyone who is a parent, caregiver, or loved one of someone who struggles with mental health issues, estrangement, addictions, gender dysphoria, incarceration, homelessness, or any other problem that causes you to experience emotional and spiritual turmoil.
Our mission is to give comfort, encouragement, and hope to hurting parents/caregivers on their journey from surviving to thriving.

The Lebanon County Suicide Prevention Task Force, in partnership with Empower the Mind and Compeer, hosts a free Suicide Loss Support Group each month. The event is held on the third Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Compeer Office at 519 Chestnut St., Lebanon. This group offers a safe space for healing and is open to anyone 14 years or older.
Suicide loss is a different type of grief that can be isolating and confusing. You are not alone. Join us to be heard and understood.

On Saturday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m., we have two presentations planned at the Wenger Meetinghouse: “The Life and Times of Blind Johnny Wenger (1843-1916) of Weaverland, PA” by Darvin Martin and “Samuel Wenger (1846-1914): Refugee from the Confederacy” by Tood K. Miller.
On Saturday, Aug. 22, at 5 p.m., Alice Wofgang will present “Foods of the Revolutionary Era” at the evening banquet, followed by a Pennsylvania Dutch meal. The Lebanon County Suicide Prevention Task Force, in partnership with Empower the Mind and Compeer, hosts a free Suicide Loss Support Group each month. The event is held on the third Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Compeer Office at 519 Chestnut St., Lebanon. This group offers a safe space for healing and is open to anyone 14 years or older.
Suicide loss is a different type of grief that can be isolating and confusing. You are not alone. Join us to be heard and understood.
