Lowell John Sherman peacefully passed away on Aug. 5, 2026, at the age of 89.
Lowell’s life was filled with family, friends, and his beloved wife, Shirley, who preceded him in death. Throughout his life, he cared for others and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those who needed it. Lowell and his wife attended every event and competition that their children participated in, where they were a loving presence behind the scenes and in the stands. This encouragement continued on with their grandchildren.
Lowell was a member of St. Mark’s United Church of Christ. He was strong in his faith and gave his time and talent to the church. Part of his church activities included spending time at Pine Acres with his church friends every Thursday, cutting wood, and preparing space for worship. He also participated in Noon Meal, sang in the Hymn Singers Choir, and went on Mission Trips to North Carolina.
One of his favorite memories was traveling cross-country for a month in one car to visit various sights from Lebanon, PA, to San Diego, CA, with his wife, Shirley, and good friends, Millie and Bob Grimes.
He was a diligent worker. Lowell worked on Earl and Betty Shay’s Farm for much of his life. Additionally, he worked at Wengert’s Dairy and Sowers Printing. His coworkers and friends often affectionately called him “Sherm.”
He is survived by his brother, Reverend William Sherman (Kay Sherman); daughters,
Elizabeth Yocum (Dr. Jeffrey Yocum) and Mary Witalec (Robert Witalec); grandchildren,
Alyson DiLena (Josh DiLena), Zachary Yocum (Bree Yocum), Dr. Austin Yocum, and Sarah Witalec; and great-grandchildren, Jocelyn and Redmond DiLena. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Lowell, affectionately known as Pa-Pa not only to his grandchildren but also to other family members, was a strong and caring member of the family. He will be remembered for all the love, generosity, and support he shared with all those he interacted with.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in memory of Lowell Sherman to St. Mark’s United Church of Christ, 426 N. 8th St., Lebanon, PA 17042.
