The Lebanon County Envirothon program has awarded four students with its annual scholarship.

The 2020 Lebanon County Envirothon was cancelled due to COVID-19, and is planned to resume in 2021. However, its $1,000 college scholarship continues.

In fact, due to a Marcellus Shale grant awarded to the program by the Lebanon County Commissioners, an additional $4,000 has been awarded in scholarships.

After receiving applications from the ELCO, Lebanon, and Palmyra schools districts and Myerstown Enrichment, the program selected four high school seniors to receive the scholarship.

Top scoring applicant Macauley Beard received a $2,000 award. ELCO graduate Beard plans to attend Penn State University.

Students could apply for the scholarship if they were a Lebanon County resident graduating from a Lebanon County school and entering an undergraduate program. Students also needed to be majoring in “an agricultural, conservation, environmental, natural resource management, recreation, or science based” field, according to the application.

Winners were chosen based on applicant career goals, involvement in conservation activities or studies, a letter of recommendation, and scholarship need.

The Lebanon County Conservation District coordinates the Envirothon program. A press release says the scholarship “is made possible by the kindness of community donations,” as well as the Marcellus Shale grant.
