Myerstown Borough Council will again look at police coverage options when it meets tomorrow night, this time with an eye on contracting with another department instead of re-starting its own.
The borough has been relying on Pennsylvania State Police from the Jonestown barracks since it let its police department disband by attrition in 2014.

Borough Council held an outdoor public meeting on August 17 to gauge public support. That discussion focused on re-starting a borough department. Tomorrow, council is expected to discuss contracting for coverage with the Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department.
“There is no proposal or agreement up for discussion or approval,” Borough Manager Michael McKenna said in an email last week. “There will be a discussion about potentially contracting with another department. I expect that Council will exhaust all contracting options before moving to hire a consultant to restart the department.”
The NLCRPD was formed in 2012 and has 31 full time officers. It covers Lancaster County’s Warwick, Clay, and Penn Townships, plus East Petersburg Borough.
None of its four municipalities border Myerstown, although Penn and Clay Townships border Lebanon County. NLCRPD has established substations in each municipality it serves, most recently in East Petersburg when it joined earlier this year.
Borough Manager Michael McKenna said last week that that the borough had recently contacted, but not hired, Philadelphia attorney Joseph Rudolf. Rudolf represented the borough in 2013 in connection with the dissolution of the police department.
