On Thursday, June 24, PennDOT will conduct a routine inspection of the major sinkhole repair it performed in 2019 on Route 422 at the east end of Palmyra.
The repair is essentially an underground bridge consisting of dozens of pillars installed in the sinkhole to support the roadway.
PennDOT wants motorists and residents to know that there are no known problems at the site, which is in front of Palmyra Bowling and the appropriately named Sinkhole Saloon.
Spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler said that the department “placed several ports where we could lower cameras to check and see how things look underneath it all, which is what staff will be doing. County crews will be assisting with some lane restrictions, but the roadway is not expected to be completely shut down.”
Apparently recognizing the anxiety and disruption caused by 2019’s summer-long closure of Palmyra’s main road, Schreffler stressed that “[t]here is no problem that we are aware of – just routine checks. I am sure however, that motorists in the area will be concerned. No reason for concern, honest!”
