Editor’s Note: In 2021, Michael and Nicole Borrell began reviewing Lebanon Valleyโ€™s restaurants and eating attractions as the Lebanon Valley Food Critics. Since then, the couple has aimed to offer unbiased reviews of the eating and drinking establishments the Lebanon Valley has to offer. LebTown is pleased to be partnering with LVFC to share these reviews with our readers. Bon appรฉtit!

I posed the question to our followers and the response was overwhelming: Where can I find the best doughnut in the Lebanon Valley? Thank you to all who offered suggestions and responses.

We are going to run a mini-series, The Doughnut Wars, where we will attempt to find the best doughnut in the region. We will try a vast selection from each location and pick our top three. At the end, we will write a Lebanon Valley Top 5 Best Doughnut in the Valley list.

This week, we ventured all the way over to the east end of the county. Located on Route 422, east of Myerstown, Dutch-Way is a local grocery store that makes its own doughnuts.

Like any grocery store, you pick your own doughnut out of the case. The cost for these doughnuts is $0.89 each or $10.68 for a dozen.

The case of doughnuts.

Today, we picked a bakerโ€™s dozen of cream filled, chocolate peanut butter filled, blueberry filled, apple raspberry filled, cherry filled, apricot filled, glazed pretzel, glazed ring, toasted coconut custard filled, cinnamon swirl, raisin, peanut butter filled, and glazed croissant.

The baker’s dozen.

The doughnuts themselves are a good, honest size and give the impression that the filled doughnuts are fully filled. We found that to be true with one exception: the blueberry filled, which is a shame because we really liked that one.

The next thing we noticed is these doughnuts get messy. Once the first bite happens, you get powdered sugar and filling all over the place โ€“ even the glaze left a mess.

The cream filling has its own unique taste. It was my first time tasting cream filling. It grew on me, and I became a fan.

Dutch-Way offers a variety of doughnut flavors that you donโ€™t often find at other places. We applaud the way they stand out in this respect.

As always, we love to have our doughnuts with a great cup of coffee. And for that, we use Cleona Coffee Roasters. It pairs well with these breakfast treats.

The LVFC Top Three

3: Toasted coconut custard filled โ€“ Iโ€™m not a coconut fan, but the contrasting tastes and textures got this treat in the top three.

The toasted coconut custard filled doughnut.

2: Raisin โ€“ It isnโ€™t often you find this doughnut out in the wild. Raisins mixed within a cinnamon swirl are very good.

The raisin doughnut.

1: Chocolate peanut butter filled โ€“ A nice subtle peanut butter flavor. You can have it powdered or chocolate iced. Chocolate iced is the correct choice here.

Honorable Mention: blueberry filled, cream filled, glazed croissant.
