The Root Beer Barrel, a trail-side stand at the Cornwall trailhead of the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail (LVRT), will hold its first event of the season on Sunday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 7, but was pushed to Sunday due to forecasted rain.

LVRT volunteers will be running a “create your own root beer float” special event, with floats going for $3. Proceeds will benefit maintenance of the trail.

The barrel is located at the Cornwall trailhead of the trail at the intersection of Route 419 and Boyd Street.

The barrel itself was originally a similar stand shop selling food and root beer on Route 72 near Mount Gretna, some 50 years ago. It was rebuilt in 2009 for Cornwall by an Eagle Scout and the barrel’s original builder, Bill Schwartz.

In addition to the root beer floats, LVRT will also have an information tent as well as LVRT merchandise for sale.

The rain date for the event is Sunday, May 8.

The Root Beer Barrel will be staffed this season, May through October, on weekends from noon to 4 p.m. The website for the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail can be found here.
