The South Londonderry Township police set a fundraising goal of $25,000 for the a new K-9 unit after the retirement of the township’s first K-9, Rex.

The funds will go toward “purchasing, training, equipping and maintaining the new dog,” the South Londonderry website says. “We believe the K-9 Unit contributes to the safety of every resident and business owner of the community.”

According to the website, Rex was funded entirely by community donations.

Rex served eight years as a narcotics detection dog and his retirement date, Jan. 3, was declared “Officer Rex Day” by the board of supervisors.
