Cornwall Iron Furnace will host a free lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, about mining at Cornwall in the 1920s.

The lecture is titled, “The Lost Decade: Mining at Cornwall in the 1920s.” According to an event description, the 1920s represented a transitional period in the history of the Cornwall Mines, when Bethlehem Steel began to exert more control over operations and set the mines up for major production increases in the following decades. These preparatory measures included upgrading mining equipment in the open pit, development of underground mines No. 3 and No. 4, and process improvements at the concentrator plant in Lebanon.

The presentation will be given by Michael Weber, a guide, researcher, and lecturer at Cornwall Iron Furnaces who graduated from Penn State in 1982 with a geosciences degree. Following graduation, Weber spent 36 years working for the federal government as a scientist, after which he moved to the area and began his volunteer research work on the history of mining and the geology at Cornwall and similar deposits in the commonwealth.

The lecture will be held in the Freeman Hall auditorium on the campus of Cornwall Manor. No pre-registration is required to attend in person. The presentation is free to attend, although donations are appreciated.

The lecture will also be streamed on Zoom, and registration is required for the webinar.

Following the lecture, Mike Emery, site administrator of the Cornwall Iron Furnace, will moderate a brief discussion.
