In response to a now-arriving winter storm, PennDOT has imposed temporary speed limit reductions across the region, including locally on I-81, I-83, and Route 322.
PennDOT District 8 announced temporary speed limit reductions on Saturday morning, Jan. 6. District 8’s south-central region includes Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties.
Motorists are advised to avoid non-essential travel. However, for those who must travel, speed limits are reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:
- Interstates 81, 83, and 283
- Routes 15, 22, 30, 222, 283, 322, and 581
Commercial vehicles are required to use the right lane, assuming that they are not prohibited from traveling due to other restrictions that may be in effect.
PennDOT said its crews are actively treating roadways. The primary aim is to keep roads passable, rather than completely clear of ice and snow, PennDOT said in a news release. Treatment will continue throughout the storm until roads are clear.
According to Lebanon County Weather, local residents should expect up to a half-foot of snow while the winter storm passes through our region.

Motorists near plow trucks should maintain a safe distance. Passing a truck while it is plowing or spreading winter materials is highly discouraged for safety reasons.
PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit in their vehicles. Essential items include non-perishable food, water, a blanket, a small shovel, and warm clothes. Remember to consider the specific needs of passengers, such as baby food, pet supplies, or medications.
