A community effort to count individuals experiencing homelessness in Lebanon County will take place later this week, and there is a need for volunteers to help with the effort.

The 2024 Point-in-Time (PiT) Count will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 24 an 25, at the Chestnut Street Community Center, 611 Chestnut St.

A PiT Count is a way to measure the progress of a community’s efforts to reduce homelessness. It estimates the number of homeless individuals in the community, which can then be compared to data from previous years to see if the community is making progress in its goals.

At this year’s count, volunteers will have the opportunity to network while helping to gain a better representation of the area’s homeless population, the Lebanon County Coalition to End Homelessness said in a release.

The count is being conducted this year starting at a new location and with extended times. The change was made in hopes of volunteers gaining access to a greater number of unhoused residents for the count.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering for the count is asked to register online beforehand.

The PiT Count is coordinated by the Lebanon County Coalition to End Homelessness, which is made up of healthcare providers, social workers, social service organization leaders, and community volunteers. The coalition was formed in 1990 and is part of the Community Health Council.
