The borough of Myerstown is again planning the annual Flags for Heroes celebration to honor the nation’s fallen soldiers, first responders, and community heroes.
Each year since its inception, Flags for Heroes has filled the lawn at Frieden’s Lutheran Church with about 200 American flags. The event, now in its eighth year, is organized by the Myerstown-Elco Rotary Club, but this year it’s adding a new twist with the collaborative efforts of the Myerstown VFW.
The celebration this year begins with a special opening ceremony on Saturday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at the church along Route 422. As always, the church’s lawn will be covered in about 200 American flags, with individual names displayed on a large banner near the parking lot. The names of those represented by flags are updated annually.
Details are still in the planning stages, organizers said, but they urged community members to save the date and plan to attend.
“We are happy we get so much community support for this event,” says Rotary project leader Dennis Dieffenbach. “The addition of a special opening ceremony with the help of our Myerstown VFW friends should help us make 2024 the best year ever for our Flags for Heroes event.”

This year’s planning team consists of Dieffenbach and Jack Cantwell from the Myerstown-Elco Rotary Club and Tom Buck and Peter Hook from the Myerstown VFW.
Flags for Heroes is a free community event that is open to everyone. Refreshments are available.
