Penn State Extension Lebanon County recently announced that applications for the 2024 Alletta Schadler Community Service/Engagement Award are being accepted now through March 15. The award recipient(s) will be named on April 15.
Alletta “Letite” Schadler, the woman behind the award, worked for Penn State Extension Lebanon County for three decades (1969-1999). Five years in, she became the first female county extension director in the state.

Since the award was established in 2022, it has named at least one recipient each year, applying $500 to their tuition. The scholarship amount might increase in the future, dependent on funding.

Those eligible and encouraged to apply are:
- “Traditional and nontraditional undergraduate and graduate students” who are pursuing the Family and Consumer field, which encompasses child and adolescent development, apparel design, textiles and merchandising, hospitality and culinary management, food and nutrition science, dietetics, food safety, health education, public health, and related areas.
- “Outstanding” volunteers who serve the Lebanon community.
- Individuals who have not yet been named recipients of the award.
Financial need will not be used as a marker for an individual’s eligibility for the award.
The application process involves completing the application form, which is available online or at the county extension office at 2120 Cornwall Road, Suite 1, Lebanon, and submitting letters of recommendation.
