Gretna Theatre’s 97th season will feature four family- and sensory-friendly productions designed to entertain and educate children of different ages (geared to kindergarten through sixth grade) and abilities as well as their families.
The family events will be held in addition to the five mainstage productions previously announced.

All four family productions were designed with popular books in mind, with hopes of boosting literacy rates by bringing the magic of live theater to young families. Each family in attendance will receive a free copy of the book on which the production is based.
For the one-hour shows scheduled for Saturday mornings this summer, the standard “rules of attendance” will be relaxed to help accommodate audience members with autism and developmental disabilities.
Startling and strobing lighting effects will not be used, and the theater will not go dark. In addition, seating will be open, with the opportunity to stand up, walk around, take a break, and/or stand in the back of the theater with parental supervision.
The four Family Series presentations are:
- “A Year with Frog and Toad” is scheduled for Saturday, June 8. Two best friends, the cheerful Frog and the grumpy Toad, learn lessons about life and friendship through a year of adventures.
- “Jeff Boyer’s Big Bubble Bonanza” is scheduled for Saturday, June 22. Jeff Boyer, a Guinness Book of World Records holder, provides audiences with music, comedy, and an interactive bubble experience.
- “Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical” is scheduled for Saturdays, July 20 and 27. Trixie and her father set out to the laundromat and return to realize Trixie’s favorite stuffed animal, Knuffle Bunny, is missing.
- “Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat” is scheduled for Saturdays, Aug. 3 and 10. Sally and her brother have an adventure cleaning up their house after it gets transformed by the most mischievous cat before their mom comes home.
Gretna Theatre’s 97th season runs from May to August, with performances at the historic Mount Gretna Playhouse. For more information on shows and tickets, which are available for purchase starting Monday, April 1, please visit the Gretna Theatre website.
