Domestic Violence Intervention of Lebanon County will receive $500,000 to improve its emergency shelter and a secondary property, according to a press release from DVI.

The federal funding grant was awarded as a part of the $172.4 million allocated to community projects across Pennsylvania.

That appropriation, the release noted, is part of the first wave of FY 2024 government funding bills totaling $460 billion that President Joe Biden signed into law. The bills advance nutrition assistance, anti-fentanyl programs, infrastructure funding and veterans’ health care, as well as community projects.

DVI is one of only 142 communities statewide, and the only organization in Lebanon County, to receive funding. The grant will be used to improve safety, accessibility and expand services for more victims of domestic violence.

“We are thrilled to receive this money, and are grateful to have had the support from not only U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), but also from our county commissioners, state Senator Chis Gebhard, and community partners who submitted letters of support for this project,” said DVI’s executive director, LeAnne Burchik, in the release.

The funds will be used to improve safety around the shelter building, secure a parking area, increase wheelchair accessibility and install an elevator. A separate building will also be converted into a multi-use space for other services and resources.

Domestic Violence Intervention of Lebanon County provides 24-hour crisis intervention and shelter, legal and medical advocacy, counseling, housing assistance, a support group, public education and community outreach. The organization supports victims of domestic violence and their families in Lebanon County. For more information, or to call the 24-hour hotline, visit the DVIOLC.org website.
