City police have shut down a few blocks in downtown Lebanon on Tuesday, March 26, in response to a possible standoff situation at the Cahill & Son Furniture building at 837 Chestnut St.

Police have confirmed that the incident is not a hostage situation but have not provided further details at this time.

As of mid-day, traffic was blocked on 9th Street between Walnut and Cumberlands streets and on Chestnut Street from 8th to 10th streets.

Lebanon County Dispatch logs show fire police and EMS being called to the 800 block of Chestnut Street starting at noon Tuesday.

Police on scene are armed with assault rifles while they control a perimeter around the scene.

In a news release Tuesday shortly before 2:30 p.m., Lebanon police said the incident was “contained” although the scene still remained active. Police said there is currently no danger to the general public.

“We are actively working to bring this incident to a safe and timely resolution,” said police.

In an email sent around 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Lebanon School District officials told parents that the Harding Elementary, Lebanon Middle, and Lebanon High schools were being locked down while the incident was ongoing, and that students may be dismissed later than normal. The email stated that Southeast, Southwest, Henry Houck, and Northwest elementary schools had not been impacted by the police activity and were not locked down at this time. School district officials later announced that since the situation had been contained, students would be dismissed from the schools.
