Drivers in North Cornwall Township should prepare for delays on Route 72 as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation begins a traffic signal project at the intersection with Isabel Drive.

Besides a new traffic light, dedicated turn lanes and a bicycle lane at the intersection, the project – which PennDOT says will result in updated drainage, ADA ramps, erosion and sediment controls from south of Isabel Drive to Tuck Street – is scheduled to get underway on Monday, May 13, weather permitting, PennDOT spokesman Dave Thompson said in an email Monday.

The project is intended to ease congestion and improve safety at the intersection, which was chosen for improvements in a master traffic study conducted as part of the North Cornwall Commons development.

The initial work will include tree trimming, test borings, and the installation of erosion and sediment controls, which will create traffic shifts during the part of the project. According to PennDOT, the project is expected to close Isabel Drive for 14 days, with a detour available. An updated release from PennDOT prior to the implementation of the closure is expected.

The $1.2 million project was contracted to JVI Group Inc. of York Springs. PennDOT expects the project to be completed by Oct. 25.

Drivers are encouraged to check traffic conditions on major roadways in Pennsylvania by visiting 511PA.com or by following PennDOT on social media.
