The Myerstown Borough Council took steps to plan for the United States of America’s 250th anniversary at its meeting Tuesday.
The council unanimously agreed to pass Resolution 2024-18 to support the Pennsylvania Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial (America250PA).
Various municipalities in the state have been passing similar resolutions as 2026 approaches.

The borough is also beginning to plan for celebrations, including financially. The Recreation Board is planning an upcoming corn hole tournament, with earnings to be redirected to the America250PA celebrations.
The tournament may see up to 100 competing teams, council member Kathy Yang said. Each team will be charged $50, and the winning teams will receive $1,000 in earnings.
Yang said she believes the Recreation Board will be able to find enough sponsors that the borough doesn’t need to put up funds for winnings.
While exact plans for the America250PA celebration are not finalized, Yang floated the idea of a carnival. She will be attending America250PA meetings to discuss options, as well as hear other municipalities’ ideas.
In other news, the council:
- Unanimously agreed to allocate $1,401 for a portion of roadway painting on borough roads to be conducted by Jackson Township.
- Unanimously agreed to appoint Danielle Leist to the Recreation Board.
- Unanimously agreed to adopt a Fleet Safety Policy as required by their insurance company, which will require routine layman’s inspections by users of borough vehicles.
- Unanimously agreed to use of facility requests including from the ELCO school district and Mission Church.

- Tabled discussion on 226 West Main Ave., which seeks relief from borough ordinances banning trash bins stored in the front porch or yard, as a resident is in a wheelchair.
