Update Aug. 6: As inclement weather is expected to roll into the area this evening, we have updates on several of the National Night Out events. So far, two of the events have been nixed for this evening, while three others are still taking place.

  • Jackson Township has cancelled its event for tonight, due to potential severe weather. “We will work to determine a possible future date,” said the organizing group, the ELCO Activity Network, on its Facebook event page. Watch the group’s main Facebook page for future updates.
  • Cornwall Borough Police Department has rescheduled its event to Tuesday, Oct. 1, still from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Lebanon City Police Department has said that its event will take place rain or shine. The event will be moved into the Salvation Army Gymnasium if it is affected by the inclement weather.
  • South Londonderry Township Police Department is still holding its event this evening. However, they caution that anyone who sees severe weather is imminent should stay home. “We did our best to have at least a portion of NNO,” said the department in a Facebook post. “The forecast through Thursday looks like we would have had to cancel completely.”
  • Western Lebanon County Regional Police Department’s event is still on for this evening. For any further updates, watch their Facebook page.
  • Hilltop Playground Association is holding its event rain or shine. “Bring your ponchos, umbrellas or just go with the flow!,” said the group on Facebook. “We will be there for our community!”

This year’s National Night Out will be on Tuesday, Aug. 6, with four Lebanon County-based police departments, one township, and a playground association set to participate.

(We’ve attempted to be comprehensive, but if we missed any events, please email them to us at news@lebtown.com.)

National Night Out is a nationwide campaign held on the first Tuesday of August each year to foster positive relationships between community members and law enforcement officials.

The Lebanon City Police Department will hold its National Night Out at the Salvation Army, 1031 Guilford St., beginning at 6 p.m. It will feature a bike giveaway, food, music, games, vendors, and community information before ending at 8 p.m.

For more information about the event, contact Sgt. Cory Gebhard at 717-272-6611.

The Cornwall Borough Police Department will observe the National Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Park at Cornwall Center, on SR 419 across from Cornwall Elementary School.

The event will bring together the police department, the Lebanon County Sheriff’s Office, a Pennsylvania dog law officer, Special Unit 66, fire departments, the First Aid & Safety Patrol of Lebanon County, Life Lion Helicopter Landings, the U.S. Army, community organizations, and community members for an evening of connection.

It will also feature food trucks and vendors — Castanedas Food Truck, Hresko’s Bar-B-Que Pit, Island Thyme Grill, Patches Family Creamery, The Happy Waffle Food Truck, and Quentin Confections — as well as a DJ, games, bounce houses, and children’s activities.

Call 717-274-2071 or email either bhopkins@cornwallpd.org or kweitzel@cornwallpd.org for more information about the event.

The South Londonderry Township Police Department will also hold its 18th annual National Night Out celebration on from 5 to 8 p.m., at Palmyra Middle School.

The free event will feature a candy scramble at 6 p.m. on the south side of the football field and opportunities throughout the evening for connections between community members and over 100 businesses whose booths will offer free raffles, food, crafts, games, services, and information.

For more information about the event, contact tmack@southlondonderry.org.

The Western Lebanon County Regional Police Department will hold its National Night Out at the Buck Swank Stadium at Palmyra Middle School. The event is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m., with a rain date of Thursday, Aug. 8.

Vendor spaces are available, with the standard space being 10’x10′ unless more room is requested. The police department asks that vendors bring their own supplies and generators, as tables, chairs, and canopies will not be supplied, and that vendors take their supplies home and throw away their trash in the dumpsters by the concession stand.

This event will cause parking restrictions and a road closure that will affect West Walnut Street between South Railroad and South Locust streets. Starting around 4 p.m., West Walnut Street will be closed to vehicles.

Jackson Township, with support by the ELCO Activity Network, will host its Jackson Township Night Out event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Fairlane Avenue Park. Planned for the event are food trucks, first responders and apparatus, kids games, and fireworks (begining at dusk or around 9:15 p.m.)

Last but not least, the Hilltop Playground Association will hold its National Night Out from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hilltop Playground, 801 N. 6th St. The event will feature a Reading Fightin’ Phils ticket raffle to benefit Independent Fire Company, a grocery giveaway, free hot food and pizza, and free backpacks.

It will also bring together law enforcement officials, first responders, military personnel, local organizations and business figures, and community members.
