Open House at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

Free | 5-8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4 | 22 S. 6th St., Lebanon

As part of the Oct. 4, 2024, Lebanon Valley Council on the Arts First Friday Art Walk, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Lebanon will host an open house with tours (from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.) and a presentation (starting at 6:30 p.m.) on the architecture, renovations, and history of the current church building. This year marks the 145th anniversary of the laying of the buildingโ€™s cornerstone. This event marks the successful completion of an extensive capital improvement project designed to improve access and the church’s facilities.

Robert (Bob) Hoffman, principal emeritus at Beers Hoffman Architecture, will deliver the presentation at 6:30 p.m., exploring the unique High Victorian Gothic architecture of St. Luke’s as well as showcasing the history and completed renovations. Bob led the team of architects in designing a new accessible bell tower entrance as well as the complete renovations to the kitchens, restrooms, and other meeting facilities in the administrative wing of the church. Arthur Funk & Sons served as the general contractor of the project.

Completed in October 1880, the current St. Luke’s Episcopal Church building was a gift of Robert H. Coleman in memory of his recently deceased wife, Lilly, who was interred in the church’s crypt before construction was completed. It was designed by New York architect Henry Martyn Congdon (1834โ€“1922) in the High Victorian Gothic style. The building is in the form of a Latin Cross and is constructed of native bluestone and sandstone. It measures 116 feet (35 m) long and 75 feet (23 m) wide and features a square, 85-foot (26 m) tower with an octagonal turret. The roof is covered in rows of blue and red slate. Features of the building include prominent stained glass windows, exposed wooden rafters, stone mosaics, and carved stone columns.

St. Lukeโ€™s Episcopal Church is located at 22 S. 6th St., Lebanon, across the corner from Harding Elementary School.

Free | 5-8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4 | 847 Cumberland St., Lebanon

LebTown Bilingual Community Listening Event at Lebanon Community Library

Free | 6-7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16 | 125 North 7th Street, Lebanon

This first-of-its-kind bilingual LebTown event will delve into the outletโ€™s coverage of Lebanon County elections, a process that begins before Election Day and continues after. Like everything LebTown produces, this event is non-partisan and focused on the ins and outs of election coverage, based on newsroom reporting and experiences weโ€™ve had covering elections in the county over the last six years since our founding in 2018.

This event is an opportunity for LebTown to hear feedback from city residents on how our news organization can more effectively serve the Hispanic community. Lebanon city is currently 46% Hispanic, and 30% of households speak Spanish at home. We know thereโ€™s a strong desire for journalism produced by and for the Hispanic community and weโ€™ve learned from previous conversations that there are unique information needs.

This program will be filmed by LebTownโ€™s Will Trostel for online distribution in video and podcast form. The evening will begin with a 20-minute interview hosted by Lehigh Valley radio personality Alfa C. Lopez. In a conversation led by Lopez, LebTown journalists James Mentzer, Chris Coyle, and Emily Bixler, along with editor and publisher Davis Shaver, will answer questions about elections in Lebanon County โ€“ who actually conducts the election, which agencies have oversight, and how officials safeguard the polls from fraud.

Lopez will first share her questions for LebTown in Spanish and then repeat them in English. The LebTown journalistsโ€™ responses will be translated by professional translator Jessica Medina. With Medinaโ€™s help, LebTownโ€™s journalists will answer additional audience questions following the interview with Lopez.

The second half of the evening will begin with brief โ€œvision statementsโ€ from local community leaders about what theyโ€™d like to see from LebTownโ€™s city coverage. Medina will translate these remarks and facilitate dialogue with LebTown regarding how to make these visions a reality.

All attendees will have the opportunity to provide their own thoughts about how LebTown can better serve city residents and the Hispanic community through a brief reader survey. We will also collect email addresses so we can follow up with audience members as we begin putting this feedback into action.

This free event will begin at 6 p.m. and refreshments will be served. No RSVPs are necessary.
