The executive director of the Palmyra-based food pantry has announced her resignation after nine years in the post.
Shila Ulrich, who has headed the Caring Cupboard since October 2015, has accepted the job of president of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. She begins work at her new role in January, according to a release from the Caring Cupboard.
A 2005 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Ulrich earned a master’s degree in social work from Temple University in 2008.
The Caring Cupboard, an organization dedicated to ending food insecurity in Lebanon County, said Ulrich brings “nearly two decades of experience and a deep commitment to hunger relief and community support” to the new position.
“Under Ulrich’s leadership, the Caring Cupboard has expanded significantly in both outreach and impact including assuming Jonestown Outreach Pantry in 2023 and championing initiatives that have transformed the way food assistance is provided,” the release said. “She played an instrumental role in securing resources, building partnerships, and innovating service models, including the recent establishment of a new vehicle delivery service aimed at increasing food access in underserved areas.”
Terry Lewis, chairman of the Caring Cupboard’s board of directors, said Ulrich “has been a transformative leader, and while we are saddened by her departure, we are also excited to see the impact she will make on a larger scale at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.”
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is a nonprofit organization “committed to ending hunger in 27 counties across central Pennsylvania,” the organization says on its website. “By working with more than 1,130 local agencies and programs, we serve more than 253,000 people in need each month through our two Healthy Food Hubs, located in Harrisburg and Williamsport.”
The Caring Cupboard is “committed to ensuring continuity in its services” during the transition, the release said. David Fitzkee will serve as acting executive director, overseeing the management of daily operations and continuing efforts with the recently announced Beyond Hunger, Building Hope campaign to fund a new building for the organization.
