The Woman’s Club of Lebanon at its November meeting distributed $7,500 to three local organizations.
Recipients this year are BSA Troop 446, the St James Players, and The Caring Cupboard, each of which received a check for $2,500.
Club president Elizabeth Wentling said in a release the Woman’s Club was organized in 1897 “with the mission of personal growth and community improvement,” and was “instrumental in establishing the Lebanon free public library, a school of nursing and contributed to the founding of the Good Samaritan Hospital, now WellSpan Good Samaritan.”
In 2012, the release explained, the club formalized a program in 2012 through which the members select and donate each year to local nonprofit organizations. Members suggest worthy recipients, Wentling said, then make their choices in time for the November meeting, at which each group gives a presentation on what they do and how the money will be used.
According to the release, BSA Troop 446 has produced 43 Eagle Scouts since it was founded in 1951. The scout group will use the money to continue activities during their move from Covenant United Methodist Church to the Moravian Church of Lebanon and to secure storage for their equipment.
The St. James Players mentor children in the performing arts and in September 2023 opened a 4,500-square-foot, 130-seat facility at Lebanon Valley Mall. The theater group plans to use the funds to secure the rights to produce Disney’s “The Lion King Jr.”
Lastly, The Caring Cupboard has been operating a local food bank since 2001, serving the Palmyra, Annville-Cleona and Jonestown areas. The organization will use the money to support its mission to support individuals and families facing food insecurity and “fighting hunger, nourishing lives and empowering the community,” the release said.
