The Jackson Township Board of Supervisors moved forward with two paving projects in the township — Wheatland Woods and Jackson Meadows Playground — at the Feb. 18 meeting.

Supervisors told engineer Stephen Sherk to work on setting up the phasing of the Wheatland Woods project and approved the path project at Jackson Meadows.

At Wheatland Woods, supervisors are looking to work on the walking path, the entrance, and the parking area. Sherk said he would work on the first phase of the plan considering these goals.

The township has over $200,000 set aside for the entire project, though phase one does not have a cost estimate at this time.

The township applied for and was denied twice for a grant to cover the cost. Supervisors said they’re considering reapplying after completing the first phase, and the grant application might look more enticing due to the asking amount being lower.

“What they’re doing is putting together a proposal drawing to show how far phase one goes,” supervisor Thomas Houtz said. “We’re talking about a walking path, we don’t know what that looks like price-wise, dimension-wise, how far it’s going to impact the property.”

He said there isn’t a timeline for the project yet, but it would have ideally been done by now if they had gotten the grants.

For the playground, supervisors unanimously approved the paving project that will bring roughly 150 square yards of pavement.

It will be a six-foot-wide path from the parking lot and along the west end of the tennis courts. There will also be two bump-outs — one for two benches and one for under the portable toilet. The benches and the portable toilet will then be accessible without walking through the dirt and mud.

“They’ve identified some muddy areas where it’s been evident that people have been walking in between, and we’re just simply filling that in with proper walking path material,” Houtz said.

It will cost $6,928 with the township crew doing part of the labor. The township will dig out the topsoil and put the stone base in, then Hackman Paving will come in to do the fine grading and asphalt.

In other business, supervisors:

  • Appointed Thomas Morrissey to negotiate the township’s potential purchase of 551 W. Washington Ave. up to the amount of the land’s appraisal. The board has held several executive sessions to discuss the purchase. Houtz said he could not share the appraisal value. The township would be responsible for dividing it, and he said it would give better access to their building two.
  • Approved a solar ordinance. Residents will need a special exemption from the township’s zoning board permission before being allowed to start a commercial solar farm and sell energy back into the grid. The ordinance is available on the township’s website.

The Jackson Township Board of Supervisors will meet next at 60 N. Ramona Road on March 3 at 7:30 p.m.
