Several Lebanon County police departments

Powersport thefts – As the weather starts to turn warmer, thieves are keeping an eye out for powersport vehicles — like ATVs, motorcycles, dirt bikes, mini bikes, and motorized scooters. Given that these vehicles can be lifted or ridden away quickly and more easily than a car or truck, they are hot items for thieves!

These thefts also often bring other problems, like driving on sidewalks, groups of riders doing wheelies on interstates, and attempts to elude police at the expense of community safety. In addition, they often include title washing investigations, counterfeit titles, re-vinned stolen vehicles, and identity theft investigations.

Out of sight, out of mind. Remember to keep your powersport vehicles out of view if stored outside. Use deterrents like chains and locks (steering wheel, disc brake, or wheel locks) with a floor anchor. But whenever possible, store these vehicles in a locked shed or garage.

Tag and track. Consider installing a tracking device to help find your vehicle if it’s stolen. Or consider installing a kill switch that can shut off the vehicle from a remote location.

Document your ATV or powersport vehicle’s serial or VIN numbers and take photos of the vehicles for crime reporting or insurance purposes. As always, never leave your keys with your vehicle. Don’t let a crook steal your fun!
