‘Work, Fight, or Play Ball’ Author Talk at Book Bar
Free | 3-4 p.m., Sunday, April 27 | 50 N. Railroad St., Suite 1, Palmyra
Reporter and historian Bill Ecenbarger will join LebTown for an author talk at Book Bar in Palmyra (50 N. Railroad St.) on Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m. Ecenbarger will speak about his 2024 title “Work, Fight, or Play Ball.” Ecenbarger’s book examines how Major League Baseball responded to America’s entry into World War I (and how Babe Ruth came to play in Lebanon).
Ecenbarger’s fascination with the Steel League began in the early 1990s while he was living in Lebanon County and walking his dog around Penryn Park, today’s YMCA Camp Rocky Creek, where he noticed a sign for “Babe Ruth Field.” Although Ruth’s appearance at Penryn Park may be apocryphal, the Great Bambino did, in fact, spend time in Lebanon County during World War I. Ecenbarger’s deep research produced an outstanding anthology of the facts, legends, and legacy of Ruth’s time here.
Ecenbarger will speak about his research and answer questions. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase after the talk. Free refreshments will be available for LebTown members at the event from Book Bar, which features a full coffee and tea menu as well as other non-alcoholic drinks. Free parking is available in the back and on the street.

Sunday, May 18
“Stripped for Parts” Screening at Allen Theatre
Free | 1:30-3 p.m., Sunday, May 18 | 36 E. Main St., Annville
“Stripped for Parts” tells the story of the secretive hedge fund that used to own the Lebanon Daily News until it was swapped to Gannett in 2015. The film explores why Alden Global Capital has gobbled up so many newspapers only to gut them. It’s a question your LebTown editor asked himself many times from 2012-2014 when he worked for Alden, an experience that led to LebTown’s founding. Our thanks go out to the filmmakers who are letting LebTown host this screening for a nominal fee due to the alignment between our focus on local news and the message of the film.
This screening will be held in the Allen Theater, the county’s last single-screen movie house. Before and after this free screening, you’ll have a chance to meet reporters from LebTown’s newsroom and browse the attached Salamander Bookstore Cafe.
