Update Wednesday 1:30 p.m. – PennDOT announced that Route 422 has been reopened following emergency repairs to a sinkhole that closed the road Monday, and the detour has been lifted. Permanent pavement markings will be applied when weather permits.
PennDOT announced Monday that U.S. Route 422 will be closed between Prince and Duke streets starting this afternoon due to a sinkhole in the eastbound lane.
A lane restriction was already in place for the eastbound lane, but PennDOT said that following further investigation, “the decision was made to shut down the entire roadway for the safety of motorists until repairs can be completed.”
PennDOT said that it is “developing a repair plan and expects to have a contractor on site sometime tonight to begin work,” but it is unclear how long the road will remain closed.
New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company Inc. of New Enterprise will perform the work through a PennDOT highway maintenance contract.
PennDOT said a detour is in place using routes 117, 322, and 934.
