High-tech auto theft, an emerging threat – Referred to as car hacking, hijacking, or key fob cloning, an emerging auto theft trend is high-tech and does not necessarily involve forced entry. With many cars now using key fobs and keyless entry, criminals have figured out how to steal a car using technology. They purchase easily obtainable devices to connect to a vehicle’s computer and make their own key fob. This allows a thief to silently, swiftly steal a vehicle. Pennsylvania communities have begun to see more of this type of crime, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

How can you prevent theft?

  • Lock your car, take your key, every time.
  • Use a theft deterrent device. There are several options used for different reasons.
    • The most obvious, if you have it, use your car alarm.
    • Use a steering wheel lock. To be a visual deterrent, a criminal might look at your car and see a steering wheel lock in use and decide to pass by – and go on to another vehicle.

To protect against keyless entry theft:

  • Never leave your key fob near the front door or windows where a criminal can interfere with its signal.
  • Store your key fob in a Faraday bag at night or when not in use. A Faraday bag is a pouch or case that blocks electromagnetic fields, preventing access to your key fob, signal, or anything else placed in the bag.
  • Use an On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) lock. The OBD port is usually under the dashboard and allows access to a vehicle’s electronic systems. The lock encloses the OBD port and prevents devices from being inserted without first unlocking the cap of the box. An OBD lock prevents someone from stealing the car even if they are able to break in.

Who should consider using an OBD lock?

  • Owners of high-theft target vehicles (frequently stolen or luxury vehicles).
  • Drivers who park frequently in public places or overnight on the street.
  • Businesses with fleet vehicles that are at risk of tampering.
  • Anyone looking for an added layer of vehicle security.
