Commercial motor vehicle enforcement semi-annual update for 2025 – The Lebanon County Regional Police Department routinely inspects commercial motor vehicles that travel on the roads within its jurisdiction in order to reduce accidents involving commercial motor vehicles. When critical defects are found during an inspection, the vehicle is placed out of service, meaning it cannot be moved because it is a danger to the motoring public and needs to be repaired. Police also check drivers to ensure they are properly licensed and rested in accordance with federal regulations. Sometimes, the police department places a driver out of service until they get the proper rest or for other reasons.
From July through December, the Lebanon County Regional Police’s Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement stopped many unsafe trucks and unsafe truck drivers. Numerous violations were found, and many were serious, out-of-service violations. The pictures show some of the more serious violations found:
- Picture 1 shows a brake lining that is too thin to provide adequate braking.
- Picture 2 shows an improper brake hose repair. Someone used a garden hose barb connection to repair a hose line leading to the trailer. The problem with this is that it is not secure enough for the pressure (sometimes 120psi) in the air line and could blow out at any time, resulting in no braking for the trailer.
- Picture 3 shows a brake hose that has worn through the reinforcement ply and has a hole in it. There was an attempt at a repair using only electrical tape wrapped in many layers to stop the air leak.
- Picture 4 shows a damaged fuel tank with an active fuel leak.
- Picture 5 shows a contaminated brake due to an inner wheel hub leak. All the lubricant from the inner hub is leaking onto the brake and contaminating the brake surface, leading to ineffective brakes.
- Picture 6 shows a crimp in the air tubing supplying air to the brakes, and reducing the effectiveness of that brake due to the reduced volume of air it receives.
- Picture 7 shows a damaged or cut air hose that extends through the reinforcement ply.
- Picture 8 shows a leaking hazardous material. An outlet pipe was missing a bolt on a flange, which led to the hazardous material leaking from the vehicle.
