A welfare check on a suspicious vehicle led to the arrest of a Canadian man accused of attempting to steal a high-value package of precious metals, South Lebanon Township police said.
Erizander Cervantes Segui, 39, of Ontario, Canada, was taken into custody April 11 after a police officer responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle that had been seen circling an area multiple times before parking for an extended period, according to police.
An investigation revealed Cervantes Segui had traveled from Canada and was attempting to intercept a package intended for a resident using counterfeit identification, police said. The package contained silver bars and coins worth approximately $100,000.
Cervantes Segui was charged with theft by unlawful taking and identity theft, both third-degree felonies. Cervantes Segui was remanded to Lebanon County Correctional Facility in lieu of bail, which was set at $1 million in an arraignment April 11 in front of Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Verna.
A preliminary hearing in front of Judge Verna is scheduled for April 23.
Police encouraged residents to report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
