Fifth-graders in the Lebanon School District, who had been attending the district’s five elementary schools, will be going to the Lebanon Intermediate School on North 8th Street starting this fall.

The change, brought about by overcrowding and the resulting intermediate school’s renovation, was approved by the district’s school board at a business meeting Monday, May 18.

Steady enrollment growth, especially at the elementary level, has led to the construction of a new junior high adjacent to Lebanon High School and the renovation of what had been Lebanon Middle School, once the city’s high school, now renamed Lebanon Intermediate School.

Cedar athletic greats honored

The board on May 18 also approved the renaming of two athletic facilities after a pair of Cedar greats who went on to play professionally at the highest level.

The soon-to-be-installed artificial surface at Alumni Stadium will be named Dick Shiner Field at Alumni Stadium, and the Lebanon High gymnasium basketball court will be known as the Sam Bowie Court at Lebanon High School.

Shiner, a 1959 LHS graduate, played quarterback in college for the Maryland Terrapins and spent 10 years in the National Football League with six teams.

Bowie, a 1979 grad, played collegiately at Kentucky and spent 10 years in the National Basketball Association. He was the second pick in the 1984 NBA draft, where he was selected ahead of Michael Jordan. He was named to the league’s 1984-85 all-rookie team.

Also on the board’s May 18 agenda:

  • High school principal Dr. Robert Nordall recognized Kaja Dideriksen and Analis Rossario-Rodriguez as Rotary students of the month for May.
  • Lt. Col. (retired) Mike Stefanick recognized the following students who have committed to the military: Kaja Dideriksen, Payton Mazza, Ian Merisca, (Max) Sneilin Rijo Rosario, Joshua Rivera, Keisy Tapia Lianos, and Deyshaun Tillman.
  • Thirteen retiring employees from throughout the district were recognized for over 300 years of combined service.
  • Scarlet Meyer was honored for her selection to Pennsylvania’s all-state chorus
  • The board approved overnight field trip to Elizabethtown College for the boys’ basketball teams.
  • The board approved the purchase of television production equipment for the high school at a cost of $23,776.
  • The high school’s e-sports team, represented by Angel Sandoval, Nahzyil Thomas, and Josuel Mercado, displayed trophies won at recent competitions.

The Lebanon school board meets publicly twice monthly. Its next committee-of-the whole meeting will be on Monday, June 8, and its next business meeting will be on Monday, June 15. Both begin at 7 p.m. and are held in the board room of Lebanon High School at 1000 S. 8th St.
