The Jackson Township Board of Supervisors approved a payment of $99,000 to Harleysville-based Axis Stabilization for repair work on South Ramona Road bridge.
A second payment of $11,000 will be made once closing documents have been completed.
Supervisors also approved a payment of $2,600 to Wilson Consulting Group to complete a final inspection of the bridge improvements. Township engineer Steve Sherk said the South Ramona Road bridge is not on the county bridge list, so the township hired Wilson Consulting Group to inspect it when an issue with the wing wall was discovered.
A temporary 10-ton weight limit was placed in September 2025 until the partially collapsed wing wall was repaired. “Now that the issue has been fixed, we need to have them come back out and confirm the work,” explained Sherk.
Chairman Thomas Houtz questioned whether South Ramona Road and other bridges should be placed on an automatic inspection schedule for the future. “I think the Creamery Street bridge should maybe have a little bit more attention because of the environmental issues there. We want to make sure the bridge stays maintained,” he said.
The Creamery Street bridge crosses Tulpehocken Creek, where the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will begin a stream restoration project this summer around the Whitmoyer Laboratories Superfund site to remove arsenic-contaminated sediment. Work is planned for where Tulpehocken Creek meets Union Canal and extending to approximately 430 feet downstream of the South Fairlane Avenue bridge. According to a public notice on the township website, the work is part of the Superfund site’s modified cleanup plan (PDF) and is expected to be completed in late 2026.
In other news, council:
- Authorized advertisement of bids for a North Ramona Road culvert replacement.
- Approved moving forward with having a temporary fence installed on the condemned property at 425 W. Main Ave., as well as having the structure boarded. Roadmaster Bryan Weaver received quotes for $5,499.36 from National Construction Rentals for fence rental and $3,787.73 from Berks Fire Water Restorations for boarding of windows and doors.
- Houtz thanked area fire departments for their quick response to an early morning fire on June 1 that destroyed a barn on East Rosebud Road.
Jackson Township supervisors will meet next at 7:30 p.m. on June 15 at 60 N. Ramona Road.
