Quentin playground to have pickleball courts

Pickleball is coming to Quentin.

Supervisors on Monday awarded a $101,450 contract for renovations to the playground in the Scenic Ridge development off North Zinns Mill Road. Besides the conversion of existing basketball court into two pickleball courts, a new state-approved 30-foot by 40-foot multipurpose jungle gym and a foot of wooden mulch will be added, said Jeff Steckbeck, township engineer.

SLC Excavating of Quarryville submitted the sole bid which came in under what had been budgeted. When the work will occur is dependent on the contractor’s schedule and equipment delivery, Steckbeck said in an email Tuesday.

Supervisors also awarded a $12,470 contract to D.E. Gemmill Inc. of Red Lion for line painting on several township roads. Again, only one bid was received, and it was in line with the expected cost, Steckbeck said.

The project to stripe and line the township’s property at 67 W. Main St. will be bid next month, Steckbeck said.  Supervisors said they continue to explore use of that property and the parking areas in front and behind the building.

Steckbeck reported the state Department of Environmental Protection has approved a test well at the northeast corner of the Quentin United Church of Christ property. Drilling is scheduled for the week of June 22.

The West Cornwall Township Municipal Authority seeks a new well in an aquifer other than one currently used in case of drought or other issues.

Supervisors voted to appoint board chairman David Lloyd and township manager Cody Rhoads as members of the regional fire steering committee that plans to study the possibility of forming a regional fire commission. The committee includes representatives from Annville and North Cornwall townships and Cornwall and Cleona boroughs.

West Cornwall Township is served by two fire companies — one in Mount Gretna and the other in Quentin. Supervisors have met with both companies to encourage formation of a West Cornwall Townhip fire company.

Under the fire commission structure, companies would retain independence but would share operational relationships.

“We want to look at what equipment is needed, how to allocate equipment, how to purchase it,” Lloyd said. “That’s the study we are going to participate in.”

In other business, supervisors approved:

• The purchase of four portable speed display signs at a cost of $15,095. The solar-powered units will be placed on various streets in an effort to slow motorists.
• A 5,600-square-foot addition to an existing building at Mark Hershey Farms.
• The development plan for Ebersole Auto Repair Garage at the corner of SR72 and Alden Lane. The 16,000-square-foot garage will be accessed from Alden Lane.
• Installation of a post for a library book box near the playground. With the exception of the post, a resident will supply all materials for the box. This will be a “take a book, leave a book” box.

West Cornwall Township supervisors meet at 73 S. Zinns Mill Road on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be held Monday, July 13. These meetings are open to the public and do not require registration.
