Three people are facing charges after a naked 5-year-old boy was found walking on a road Thursday morning in Swatara Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police at Jonestown.
Troopers responded around 7:29 a.m. to the area of Quarry Road and South Lancaster Street after receiving a report of the child. Good Samaritans held the boy until troopers and EMS arrived, police said. He was transported to WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital for a medical evaluation.
Troopers traced the child to a nearby residence at 2 N. Poplar St., where they found what they described as hoarder conditions, including trash throughout the home, hundreds of flies, and limited room to move due to clutter.
The child’s bedroom had a baby gate affixed to the outside of the door frame, held together with zip ties and duct tape, police said. Wood boards were drilled above the gate on the outside of the frame to prevent the boy from escaping the room.
Inside the bedroom, troopers observed feces smeared on the walls and window, a torn-apart bed covered in food, trash on the floor and hundreds of flies, according to the incident report.
Jade Shuey, 21, Stephanie Schaffner, 42, and Tucker Heagy, 20, were all taken into custody and each charged with one count of endangering the welfare of children.
They were arraigned through District Court 52-3-03, which is presided over by Magisterial District Judge Kim R. Wolfe.
Dockets had yet to appear in the state’s judicial database as of Saturday afternoon.
