Preserving American Literature for the Next 250 Years at Hall of Philosophy

In 1958, writer and critic Edmund Wilson had the idea to publish a series of books to preserve the most important works of American literature, an idea that in 1982 would become the Library of America. In the late ’50s, the works of James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, Henry James, and William Faulkner were either completely or almost completely out of print and unavailable to readers — and the sense that there was distinctly “American” literature was unknown. Now, over 40 years later, the Library of America has published 400 volumes and is seen as a primary judge of the canon of great American writing. But in the age of the internet and social media, when reading is declining at precipitous rates, why would publishing books to preserve the canon be important at all? Stefanie Peters explores why preserving American classics still matters.

The Washington Band of Annville’s 170th Anniversary Concert at The Church of the Good Shepherd

The Washington Band of Annville is celebrating 170 years of music on Sunday, Aug. 2, with a free concert featuring the band’s favorite pieces. The concert begins at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 1500 Quentin Road, Lebanon.
In addition to a few classic selections, the awards-show-style concert features 10 categories of music nominated and voted by band members. Categories include favorite march, favorite jazz or swing arrangement, favorite novelty piece, favorite pop music arrangement, and more.
The Washington Band was founded on Aug. 2, 1856, by nine cornet players. The band rehearsed in the tavern known as the Washington House on the west end of Annville, which led to the Washington Band of Annville’s name.
Today, the band is made up of about 50 volunteer band members ranging in age from high school students to seasoned players in their 80s. The band is under the direction of Mike Yeagley and rehearses in a historic 90-year-old building in Annville.
“It is such a privilege leading this great group of musicians,” Yeagley said. “It’s awe-inspiring to think that before online streaming services, before CDs, cassette tapes and eight-tracks, before television, radio, and even the invention of the phonograph, the Washington Band of Annville has been sharing music with Annville and surrounding communities for 170 years.”
In addition to enjoying the band’s music, guests are invited to check out the Washington Band’s information table to see historical photos and memorabilia of the band throughout the years.

The Lebanon County Suicide Prevention Task Force, in partnership with Empower the Mind and Compeer, hosts a free Suicide Loss Support Group each month. The event is held on the third Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Compeer Office at 519 Chestnut St., Lebanon. This group offers a safe space for healing and is open to anyone 14 years or older.
Suicide loss is a different type of grief that can be isolating and confusing. You are not alone. Join us to be heard and understood.
