Jonestown Borough Council unanimously approved a quote from Reed Lock for a new park camera system, including 21 cameras for a total of $28,455, at its monthly meeting Tuesday.
Half of the purchase will come out of the general fund and the other half will come from the parks and recreation fund.
The COSTARS vendor was reportedly significantly less expensive than another vendor, which provided a quote of $28,329.98 for only 16 cameras. The Reed Lock quote for 16 cameras (the amount currently in the park) was $23,706.41.
The five additional cameras are for areas not already covered. There are issues with some of the cameras already in place, with councilman Daniel Shuman saying “there is an issue with some of the equipment beyond the performance.”
“We really need to do something, and this is the better of two options,” said Shuman.
Installation will begin three weeks after approval is communicated to Reed Lock.
In other news, council:
- Tabled action on hiring a borough accounting firm, with plans to wait until the borough hires a new secretary. A vote to hire Ammerman, Ginder, & Co. LLC as a firm failed, with council members Jay Young, Amber White, Lynn Kleinfelter, and Madisyn Breiner opposed.
- Discussed the secretary position, with interviews for the post held recently but no action taken. Council debated whether the position would be full- or part-time, as well as ways to ensure smooth transitions between future secretaries.
- Informally agreed to solicit an opinion from the fire company on potential speed tables on West Market Street.
- Unanimously agreed to $600 in costs for Eagle Solutions to set up a SharePoint site, at a rate of $85 per hour and an expected cost of $425.
- Unanimously accepted the resignation of Gary Kneasel from the Northern Lebanon County Authority and appointed Tom Keefer to fill the position.
- Unanimously approved the purchase of up to $400 in cold patch at $151.72 per ton.
- Unanimously approved the distribution of three maintenance department credit cards, one per employee, contingent on employees signing a financial responsibility statement.
- Unanimously agreed to direct the borough engineer to create a drawing of beacon lights for a PennDOT application, which is expected to cost around $1,000.
- Unanimously approved a scope of work from SCS engineering for a DEP leaf waste management program grant, at no cost to the borough.
- Unanimously approved a social media policy for the municipal Facebook page.
- Discussed right-to-know requests and personnel matters in executive session.
- Announced that council meetings will move to the second Monday of each month in 2027.
- Heard reports and unanimously approved minutes.
